Today marks 91 years since the creation of Social Security. On this day in 1935, the monumental 37-page Social Security Act was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. And now, most Americans do not remember a time before Social Security.

But Social Security and its beneficiaries are vulnerable right now.
The Big Ugly Law has made catastrophic cuts to important programs like Social Security. I am furious about the devastating cuts Republicans have rushed through this year with the Big Ugly Law.
To me, it is plain and simple: hardworking folks paid into Social Security, and it is not a handout. I oppose the privatization of Social Security and support proposals that make the benefit formula more generous, use cost-of-living formulas that consider the expenses of seniors' purchases, and preserve Social Security for the future by scrapping the cap on income subject to Social Security taxes.
Social Security demonstrates our shared commitment to ensuring a dignified life for everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
