FYI: What’s in the cruel Republican debt ceiling bill (and we need to do about it)
We need to cut to the chase.
The MAGA Republicans pulled off the mask this month and showed us exactly what they value. They tied raising the debt limit to slashing billions of dollars in critical support for families in Northwest Washington and around the country.
They are seriously threatening to cause the United States of America to default on our debts unless they can hurt families. It is callous and cruel.
Their new debt ceiling bill – what I like to call the Default on America Act – passed with exclusively Republican support and by just two votes.
Here's what it would do:
Put nearly 165,000 veterans at risk of losing their health care
Slash about $67 million in funding for Washington schools that serve low-income students
Eliminate preschool and child care for nearly 5,000 kids in Washington
Put over 370,000 Washingtonians at risk of losing their Medicaid health coverage
Make college more expensive for almost 90,000 students in Washington
And put about 190,000 people at risk of losing their SNAP benefits (food stamps)
And that is just here in Washington state! There are similar impacts all over the country.
This is not public service. This is pain and suffering in the service of politics.
We need a new Democratic majority in the House.
We can do this. I know we can.
