One verdict is not justice. It is time to act!

Earlier this year, I wrote to you about my support for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

That was before the verdict.

The guilty verdict in this case is an important step toward accountability and justice, but a single verdict is not justice. Justice only comes when the systemic racism in our policing culture is wholly eliminated.

How do we change the culture? It starts by changing the rules. That will not magically change things overnight, but it will put in place new expectations for behavior — that will guide hiring, training, promotion, and accountability measures.

That is exactly the heart of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This legislation is a critical step in the right direction. My colleagues and I will continue fighting in Congress to ensure it is passed and then signed into law.
