Voting rights are basic rights

Ballots dropped in Washington this week.

One of my priorities in Congress is to break down barriers for all people to fully participate in our democracy, and that starts with protecting the right to vote.

You'd hope we could count on the nation's highest court to protect these Constitutional rights. But recently, the Supreme Court upheld racially gerrymandered district lines in Texas and Wisconsin, enabling the suppression of minority votes.

This is unjust and violates the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Now it's up to Congress to protect every Americans' voice at the ballot box. We will not stand for partisan and racially-motivated violations of our most basic rights.

We cannot take these rights for granted.
